I am glad I have these. I usually feel very uncomfortable with cheaper muffs that I've tried, but these are comfy. Typically I use In-Ear Impulse plugs and they are enough... except when the range ninjas start shooting their 5.56 with a compensator right next to you (I'm not a "fudd", but can't you stand a few lanes away?). In which case I wear these ear muffs over my ear plugs. They have about the strongest dB reduction that I found and they combine well with the ear plugs and the tension is not too much. Additional ear pro is also advised when teaching new shooters and to overcome flinch on powerful calibers, so these will do the trick. Personally I haven't yet needed the active (electronic) ear muffs, but I'm sure it's a good idea to have them when you need to talk to others. I hope folks realize that the electronics don't dampen the sound, it's really just the same ear muffs, but with a little amp to amplify the quiet stuff (speech), so you can hear it. Some day I'd like to explore electronic ear pro for hunting applications. But so far these are all I need. P.S. Another reason I returned some other cheap set of muffs for these - they were getting in the way of shouldering the stock. These don't, as designed. Unbeatable price, although a wonky color.
