Review of S&W .40S&W...
Review of S&W .40S&W Shield M2.0 Performance Center 4 inch barrel I have carried concealed every day for more than 30 years. Early on, when Virginia required a permit holder to list two and only two side arms for concealed carry my choice was .32 Seecamp and S&W J frame model 42 in .38 special. In the intervening years I have carried a Kahr P380 and CT380 and P9. I have carried Glock I have also come full circle and carry a S&W 442UC (.38 special +p). Threat levels in the USA remain generally low. However, there is a recent surge of active shooter incidents, particularly in houses of worship. So, perhaps a slightly larger side arm is in order. Larger, not necessarily in capacity (although that is a plus), but larger in the sense that a closer to 'full size' side arm is easier to shoot effectively; and, has the ability to use more effective ammunition. I have had a Glock 23 for many years. The Glock is a very functional pistol, but the 23/19, while more compact than the 22/17, is still not what I would call a concealed carry pistol. I have what I refer to as J frame size hands. Glocks and full size Sigs just don't feel 'right' in my hands. Enter the S&W Shield in .40S&W! I understand the v.2.0 frame is stiffer than the earlier version because of embedded steel in the frame. And the Performance Center edition is supposed to have superior trigger. I don't know if it is any one of these factors, or just the shape of the pistol; but, it feels really great in my hands – better than any Kahr, Sig, Glock or even (gasp!) a 1911. The only thing I have ever held and shot that feels as close to perfect is a Sig P230 .380; and the Sig P230 suffers from the DA/SA trigger feel change. Also, (and this is admittedly perception) the Sig P230 blow back .380 seems to kick as hard or harder than the S&W Shield in .40S&W. The Shield is admittedly a heavier pistol. Frankly, I am amazed at how well I shoot the Shield. Right out of the box it shoots to exact point of aim at 7 yards. I have not worked at longer range shooting yet because most defensive uses of a pistol by civilians are at much closer range. My third outing with the Shield was at an outdoor 'range' with three B27 targets set up. At 7 yards, facing away from the targets, I turned 180°, drew, double tapped each target, reloaded, and double tapped each again. I hit each target with each shot and my time was 9.1 seconds. I had not fired an El Presidenté in many years, but 12 hits inside the seven ring on six different target sight pictures and a mandatory reload in 9.1 seconds is not to shabby for an old guy. I credit previous training and the Shield PC 2.0 with what I think is pretty good performance. The Shield inspires great confidence. It looks good, it feels good, and it shoots good. What I like: Fit, finish, form factor. Perfect function (no break-in hiccups). Consistent trigger with clean break. My edition has no manual safety (I like this, manual of arms like a revolver). Shoots right to point of aim out of the box. What I don't like: Well...um...nothing really. As another reviewer noted, the magazine springs are really really stiff. It is initially very hard to load the mags. Load 'em up and keep 'em loaded. In a short time they get somewhat easier.
