This gun is stupid...
This gun is stupid fun. Ridiculously fun to shoot. Ammo is still 'cheap' enough to blow through hundreds of rounds without counting how many shots you might have left. The Tippmann speed loader took all the wait time out of having to reload the magazines... and now that I have one I know I can never go back to manually reloading 22 magazines. Two issues have made this plinker a project gun for the first couple of months of owning it. The first issue would be that the gun for some reason would not seat the bolt correctly, resulting in a misfire for only the first round of every inserted magazine. The temporary solution was to eject the first round or to use the forward assist (although the assist did not result in a 100% of firing, but it did help). A warranty claim later and Tippmann replaced the factory bolt with a newer version, apparently milled to tighter tolerances. This fixed the issue initially, however, this brings me to the next problem I had to deal with... The M4-22 originally was never designed to take aftermarket triggers. However, guns with serials above 20,000 had a few adjustments made to the manufacturing process and so the trigger is closer to mil-spec... but not perfect enough to just drop in any trigger. There was little information online on aftermarket modifications to this gun, and any information I found was very outdated. So I purchased two triggers that I had seen others online manage to get working in their M4-22, the Geissele and Franklin Binary. The Gessele arrived first and dropped in perfectly, and the alignment looked good. However, The hammer is likely not striking the bolt properly. The hammer of the Geissele has less surface area on the impact side than the factory hammer. With the Geissele installation, I could not get the gun to fire. The Franklin Binary is a drop-in trigger in every way except the safety... it's just too wide for the Tippmann. Others used shim washers to fill the excess space between the right side of the gun and the right-hand handle of the safety, I opted for a 1/2" o-ring instead after trying a shim washer and not liking the feeling. Loctite is necessary to keep the threads from undoing themselves, and the pressure between the o-ring and the safety makes it fairly stiff to turn. But after putting maybe 600 rounds through the trigger it runs so smoothly it's unreal. TLDR: If the bolt was consistent out of the box this would be an easy five stars. I have two Tippmann bolts now, and they both prefer different triggers. Not sure what that is about, but the issue can be recreated so there is clearly something going on. A super fun gun that I can take to range day without breaking out the wallet too heavily. Shoutout to Greg from Tippmann customer service. Super helpful rep and very informative. Very well-versed in how their guns function and the sole reason I gotta give this product 5 stars and not 4 for the bolt issues.
