I've always wanted a...
I've always wanted a .270 caliber rifle. I like the flat shooting characteristics of the .270 round, similar to my 7mm, but better for smaller Florida deer. This Model 70 was my first Winchester. Not that I have anything negative to say about Winchester. I just never seriously considered them, as most of my long guns are Ruger or Browning. I was shopping for a .270 bolt action, and actually wanted an old model Remington 700 BLD. (not the new stuff). I saw the Winchester online and it caught my eye when I saw they started making it with the maple stock, Well, it did not dissappoint. This is by far the most beautiful weapon I have ever owned. The stock is pristine and the fit and finish is outstanding. The bolt operates as Winchester advertises. It is silky smooth right out of the box. Much better than my Ruger M77, sorry Ruger. I mated it with a Leupold VX III scope. At the range it is a tack driver. I sighted it at 50 yards after a home bore sighting. I then moved out to 100 yards and as expected it was about 1.5 inches high. After some more fine tuning I zeroed it at 100 yards. Not only did it hit the red. The gun was putting the rounds through the same holes! I would have complete confidence aiming dead on at 200 yards as well, simply because the .270 is an energizer bunny that just keeps going! I cannot say enough about this Winchester. Except if you have the cash and want not only a tack driving rifle, but a beautiful show piece as well. Then buy one. Just be sure to wrap the stock in protection before taking it out in the woods. Too beautiful to beat up.
