The Caldwell Model...
The Caldwell Model 720001 Ballistic Precision Chronograph is a very good product, and Buds price was the best I found. When there's a choice, I usually default toward Caldwell because of their excellent customer service. I chose this type of chrono instead of the type that attaches to the barrel of the weapon. And I chose the no-frills _$ model. No lights - no need for them; no tripod - already have one. Most of my shooting is weekdays at a private club, where I have the ability to go the required 10' downrange to set up the chrono. If I needed to check velocity at a range with limited down-range access, I would favor the barrel-mount style. (Yes Professor - 10' down-range is not measuring exact MUZZLE velocity. The bullet may have slowed a bit;-) The model I bought comes with the cord to plug into your cell phone, and there is an app that does magical things with the data received from the chrono. Haven't bothered. At 10' away, the readout on the chrono is very visible and I simply wrote down the velocities from two three-shot strings. Added them up, divided and had my average. (Yes, born in the fifties. I use my cell when it's the only tool for the job. But, I believe this chrono, with the push of a button, will give you average FPS, Extreme Spread, Standard Deviation, etc.) One note of caution - for this or any chronograph - Your pain-staking attention to detail while hand-loading does not necessarily mean the exact same velocities round-to-round. I was very surprised. But after consulting some more experienced folks, I learned that exact duplication of velocities are rare. That's why they all use those ES and SD numbers. (Final result: 6.5 Grendel, 20" bbl, 123gn pill. 2550FPS. Plenty good enough to beat moderate crosswind, but still get good lifespan out of my barrel.) Enjoy, DM
