A: Dennis, Yes. . 308 is actually a bit higher chamber pressure than 7.62x51, so 7.62 is perfectly safe to shoot from a . 308 but not the other way around. It is the exact same as you can shoot 223 out of a 5.56 but you cant shoot 5.56 out of a 223. So if you have some 7.62 NATO laying around shoot away. Hope this helps.

A: Dennis, all I can say is I have similar rifles in .308, Savage, Remington and Bergara and have been shooting 7.62x51 for decades with nary an issue with modern ammo. The current specification for 7.62×51 is a pressure limit of 50,000 psi, while the .308 pressure limit is SAAMI standardized at 62.000 psi, so you can safely shoot 7.62x51 from a .308, but not the other way around.
